Utah Legislature overrides governor's veto of transgender sports ban (March 25, 2022)
Every Utahn and child deserves equal rights. I wholeheartedly opposed the transgender child sports ban. During a panel discussion, I stated “What we got instead was a culture war bill that was extraordinarily divisive and extraordinarily hurtful to a vulnerable — a very vulnerable — and marginalized population.” On the house floor, I argued against the bill saying “Things are not simply black and white, in terms of gender orientation, sexual orientation, gender identification. It’s definitely not accurate to say that girls are girls and boys are boys… Our public education students deserve better than that from us.”
Utah lawmaker's push for expanded background checks on guns stalls in Committee (Feb. 16, 2022)
I have continued to push for expanded background checks on private firearm sales. My legislation was a “moderate and reasonable approach to addressing gun violence and safety in the state.” 88% of Utahns support background checks, so why won’t Republican Legislators?
An attack on the Capitol is not "legitimate political discourse" (Feb. 7, 2022)
Read my Op-Ed about the RNC resolution condemning investigating the Jan 6. attack on the U.S. Capitol. I state, “we must oppose the effort of any group or individual to terminate or interfere with an investigation that allows our country to get to the bottom of the Jan. 6 attack on our country and Constitution.” The attack on the Capitol was not "legitimate political discourse" but an attack on our country, democracy, and Constitution.
Summit County legislators explain their mask mandate votes (Jan 21, 2022)
Listening to health officials is imperative to keep our communities safe. The mask mandates should have been left up to the local level county officials to decide. “It's just foolhardy, I think, to ignore the best counsel and advice that we're getting from our public health experts,” King said. “Our public health experts are saying, ‘Look, masks aren’t a silver bullet. For that matter, vaccines aren’t a silver bullet. But they certainly help slow the spread of the virus.”
Democrats respond to the State of the State Address and layout priorities for the 2022 session (Jan 20, 2022)
Read about the Democrat's response to Gov. Cox’s State of the State address and what our priorities were in the 2022 Legislative Session. “Let me first say, there ARE some of Gov. Cox’s proposals that Democrats can agree with. While we might disagree on the best policy approach, our state faces many critical issues that we must come together as a legislature to resolve,” House Minority Leader, Rep. Brian King said.
House passes bill suspending Utah's 'test to stay' program, but with no public hearing (Jan 19, 2022)
The public’s input is critical to our democratic process and I disapproved of not having public opinions heard on the mask mandate and test-to-stay bills. “Rep. Brian King: "I'd like to see the public have an opportunity to weigh in." Says he has a problem with "rushing unnecessarily" to debate the topic on the House floor without going through the usual public process.”
Lawmakers received hundreds of emails in support of the independent redistricting commission. Why didn't they listen? (Jan. 18 2022)
I voiced my opposition to the redistricted gerrymandered Congressional Maps. Public comment is crucial in this process. “I thought that there was very little discussion with the public or with Democrats about the congressional maps that we were asked to vote on.”
