Economy
Here in Utah, we are fortunate to benefit from a strong economy. However, despite having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, Utahns are not feeling the benefits of economic recovery. We need more and better economic opportunities for all Utahns.
Utahns' wages are stagnate, and it is nearly impossible to make ends meet on minimum wage. By raising the minimum wage and pushing for equal pay, the legislature can support Utah's working families. We need to create a social and environmental atmosphere that will attract companies to Utah and promote the development and success of homegrown Utah businesses.
If the state had a revenue surplus of $100 million, here's how I would allocate the money:
1. $50 million - public education needs, including increasing teacher salaries, reducing class sizes, hiring ESL teachers, and increasing the programs and resources of our higher education programs.
2. $30 million - programs or tax incentives to develop alternative energy resources such as solar, wind or geothermal sources.
3. $20 million - funds to be used for assistance in extending health coverage for those currently uninsured.
